Searching For African American Yoga Classes

By Carolyn Edwards

Yoga is a mixture of physical, spiritual and mental practices and disciplines in achieving enlightenment originating from ancient India. This is a physical exercise form popular in western countries while in Indian traditions, it is so much more than that. Studies have been done in determining the effectiveness it has as complementary intervention for diseases but with inconclusive results.

Anyone can start doing this by joining others in classes so that they would be able to learn more about the proper ways of doing it. There are African American yoga classes Chicago who people with color can comfortably attend but is also open for everyone. Here are some tips in finding one in your area you can join.

Start searching in your area for establishments using the internet that offers these classes and get their contact information. You may also try the yellow pages or the local newspapers as there could be advertisements about them in there. Create a list of those you have found and get more information about them.

Ask recommendations from your friends and family members because they might know a class or a teacher and have taken one before. They will share their experience with it and if it was satisfactory or not and helpful in reaching their goals. If those they recommended are not on the list yet then add them to acquire more information regarding them.

Research the background of the yoga instructor which includes how long they have been teaching this to others. Their longevity is an indication that they are capable in teaching students and having them regularly return for the class. This can mean that they are preferred more compared to others to properly teach the ways of yoga.

Ask them how their class is different compared to other exercise classes and if they explained it well then this shows their knowledge of the subject is great. Some of them give amazing answers though some are not able to give one answer which is quite disappointing. Yoga is something more than a social experience, having fun, getting strong or stretching.

Read some online reviews and testimonials to check the thoughts of the people regarding the instructor and the class. This would also be your chance in seeing if any complaints or negative feedback against them have been written. These things are available in websites which allows users to review some things.

Ask them how they prepared to become a yoga instructor and where they educated formally or not. Great teachers could either be educated formally or not as long as they were able to give you a solid answer clearly which means they have the knowledge and skills required. If they do not have a clear answer then you better start looking for another one.

Try out beginner classes first so you would learn the different basic concepts that may not be present in other exercises. You will comfortable about not being knowledgeable because you are just the same with other students there. Try out different classes as well until you will find the class and instructor you like to be practicing with and suits you best.
