An Overview Of LASER Treatment For TMJ

By Harold Walker

TMJ diseases can be so painful and disturbing, and more devastatingly, can be idiopathic. The primary distress associated with it even at its mildest form is difficulties with chewing and speech. LASER treatment for TMJ is one of the most suitable therapies, being more advantageous as it is pain-free with much less side effects and does not require a high demanding procedure, unlike surgery.

TMJ is a short way of saying Temporo-Mandibular joint. You can find it beside the cheeks and anterior to the ears. The articulating surfaces are the head of the mandible (also known as jaw bone) and the inferior aspect of the temporal bone at the floor of the skull. Movement on the joint is what makes chewing and talking possible. These actions are supported by the muscles located around the joint.

Temporomandibular diseases usually arise as a result of an attack on the muscles and the arterial and venous supply in the area. If not for microorganisms, most people will not suffer any of them. It is possible for someone with symptoms at the joint to also experience problems such as bruxism, headache, and ear pain. This is because of the rich nerve supply for the joint which transfers symptoms from here to other parts of the face and skull.

After microorganisms have successfully invaded the body cells, the immune levels will reduce and this will lead to acute or chronic inflammation. If it is chronic, the attack on the body will be more grievous and it may take time for it to recover. Inflammation can lead to the occurrence of rashes, redness, and swellings on the body. There is also going to be much pain.

For patients to feel well despite their ill health, proper medical care must be administered. If the underlying cause is known, trying to eliminate it will be easier but it is challenging, as in most cases, when it is unknown. Such cases that are idiopathic can now be addressed with the use of LASER therapy.

LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. It emits coherent photons which can be targeted on a spot. This therapy utilizes the emitted radiation to penetrate tissues and triggers some physiological responses that alleviate the symptoms.

Anything that can make the body to heal naturally should be encouraged. It has often been said that radiation is bad for the body because of its possibility to cause cancer but this is not very true because not all of them can bring about this problem. Generally, LASER, X-rays and other forms of radiations with little or no ionizing property cannot cause cancer. Instead, they are used to terminate cancerous tumors so instead of being afraid of it, one should rather embrace it as a type of treatment.

This non-invasive procedure has lots of advantages over surgery. For instance, it is painless, thereby needing no anesthesia, more easily administered, is not threatened by postoperative infections, and does not impose more injury so it provides a better cosmetic effect. The use of this procedure for treating temporomandibular joint disorders also lasts longer thereby reducing costs and minimizing the need for check-ups and other treatments given after a surgery.
