Information About Orthodontics In Key Largo

Orthodontics refers to a subspecialty within the field of dentistry. It deal solely with the correction or management of teeth and jaws that are improperly positioned. This involves the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment or correction of medical conditions, disorders, and conditions. Other names used to refer to this field include dentofacial orthopedics and orthodontia. The medical practitioners who specialize in this field are referred to as orthodontists. This is worth knowing about orthodontics in Key Largo.

The term orthodontics comes from the Greek words orthos and odont. The term orthos means correct while the word odont means tooth when translated to English. For over 2000 years, dentistry and orthodontia have been closely related. Teeth from mummified bodies have been found to have a metal band placed on every single tooth. This is enough evidence of how old the field is and the level of advancements made to the field today.

The misalignment between the upper and the lower jaw is usually referred to as malocclusion. This is not a disease, but is rather a disorder. How prevalent this condition is usually vary from one location to another. Orthodontic treatment is usually used to categorize how severe the condition is in a patient. There are many people who suffer from this condition and it is estimated that about 30 percent of all the people can benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic treatment usually focuses on many aspects. However, the main focus is usually dental displacement. The treatment may also focus on controlling and modifying facial growth. In case of a severe malocclusion, a combination of various approaches is used. Some of the combinations that may be used include jaw surgery, reverse pull facemask, and orthodontics. Most cases can usually be solved successfully without much trouble, even though it takes variable amount of time.

Treating malocclusion usually lasts about 2 years in most cases. Part of treatment entails installing braces that are altered regularly after a period of 8 to 6 weeks. The treatment plan is in most cases customized according to the needs at hand. Cases involving patients still undergo growth is handled with care and adjusted accordingly.

Malocclusion treatment usually begins during permanent dentition in the early stages.this happens before skeletal growth is completed. Orthognathic surgery is always done in cases where skeletal growth has totally been completed. There are cases where teeth has to be removed to help in the treatment process.in the early stages of growth the damages done is minimal but despite the age of a patient the results are the same.

It has been observed that after treatment in most patients, teeth usually tend to return to their pre-treatment positions. This usually happens within ten years after treatment. To avoid relapse of teeth to their early positions, patients are usually offered with retainers. Retainers come in two main types. They may be fixed or removable.

Removable retainers are to be worn during different periods of time. The period one is expected to wear a retainer is based on their need to make their teeth stabilized. Fixed retainers are like simple wires and are to be fixed on the labial surface of the incisors.
