Essential Tips Before Visiting Northport Eye Care Center

By Rebecca Schmidt

Eye care is a very important part of your health. You should visit your optometrist for an eye exam regularly at least once every year. Such visits to a Northport eye care specialist will help in the early detection of problems and can easily be corrected by the use of framed glasses or contact lenses.

Due to the interconnectivity of the body, an optometrist while carrying out an eye test on you, might stumble upon a diagnosis of other problems in your body like brain tumors and high blood pressure. This goes to show the importance of your visit to your optometrist as it can serve as an early diagnostic tool for your entire body.

In a highly digital world, many people spend a lot of time in front of a screen ranging from computer screens to screens of mobile devices. This can be hurtful to the eyes and you should learn to rest your eyes after a certain length of time in front of a screen.

Most screens come with some kind of glare which is harmful to the eyes after been exposed to them over a length of time. This usually results in some form of headache and eye strain. You can reduce this effect by using an anti-glare screen or putting an anti-glare material in front of your screen. You can also change the positioning of your monitor and choose colors that do not cause glare while working behind a computer screen.

The importance of your eyes can't be overstated. Your eyes are indispensable, both for sight and your general wellbeing. So utmost care should be taken to keep your eyes in good health everyday and protect them from potential mishaps from the environment around you.

If you work long hours at the computer or reading, lift your eyes away from the screen periodically to rest them. Focus on a distant object. This prevents your eyes from becoming overstrained and helps rest overtired eyes. Take a few minutes to close your eyes and relax them. Consider applying two tea bags or cucumbers to your eyes for 10 minutes each afternoon, to help reduce puffiness and allow your eyes a much-needed rest.

The sun emits some ultraviolet rays which can be very harmful to the eyes. To prevent this, use of UV protected sunglasses is recommended. If a pair of glasses does not have a UV stamp or sticker, it might not be effective in blocking out the sun's UV rays..

A windy day can be dangerous to the eyes due to the abundance of dust particles and flying objects. Wear eyeglasses to prevent your eyes from being injured from these elements. Good eye protection is also important when carrying out some physical or sporting activities like biking as it helps prevent an accident that may occur to the eyes.

Some daily tips are necessary for eye care. Regularly splashing some water on your eyes will help reduce puffiness. You should prohibit the use of heavy creams around the eyes as they can cause some eye irritation. Maintain good hygiene as dirty hands can easily lead to infections like conjunctivitis. Remove contacts before bed and always clean them regularly. Make it a habit to always remove makeup and sunscreen from your face before sleeping.
