Effects Of Racial Bullying In Nursing

By Stephanie Walker

Ethnological discrimination is spreading among the nation and nurses are not immune to it. There are many complaints received by the commission of human rights in different countries. If a person is bullied, he/she cannot work in peace meaning he will deliver very little. This is very dangerous especially in racial bullying in nursing as these are the same people that will save your life.

Ethnological racism usually happens in many ways. In hospitals, for instance, you will find that the patients are the most hostile as they openly refused to be attended to by a nurse who does not emanate from their preferred ethnic community. This can make the nurse to be so confused and hurt and even be unable to work well because no one can be comfortable in such an environment.

Hospital administrators are also very selective, and they tend to promote the workers who are from a background that is similar to theirs. Therefore, the foreign workers will often feel overlooked as they may have worked in that hospital for years yet the local ones are promoted from day to day. In addition, the administrators can openly show the immigrants that they do not consider them for a promotion.

In some occasions, doctors, as well as the co-workers, also bully their fellow workers who are from a different ethnological background. This mostly happens when the nurse has different views which are mostly right. So the doctors ensure that they use harsh and hurtful words to silence them so that they do not feel intimidated that a foreign nurse can be better than them.

This can get worse especially if the nurse is a male. The field of nursing is usually dominated by women therefore if a man works in the same field and happens to be an immigrant, he can go through a hard time at his workplace. The bullies are mostly patients as they can insult the male nurse. In some occasions, the doctors can also put down the nurse by insulting them based on gender and ethnicity.

For this reason, awareness programs are sprouting day night to defend the disadvantaged lot as well as show people how important it is to treat everyone equally. Most people are learning, and the number of complaints is decreasing in some states. The nurses also took it upon themselves to demonstrate so that everyone can hear their struggles.

Some states are sensitive about transcultural prejudice, and they have set rules against the same. Therefore, if a person is accused of extending demeaning comments to an immigrant, he/she can be charged with a serious offense. Nurses who are lucky to work in such states are much advantaged as the challenges they face do not emanate from prejudice. Also, these nurses can deliver the relationship with patients and fellow workers is not hostile.

Therefore, people need to understand that they are equal and they should treat each other with a lot of respect. This is especially important in the hospitals because if you become hostile to your nurse, he/she may be the only person who can save your life. With this in mind, people will be friendlier to the immigrant nurses.
