Charlotte NC Chiropractor Provides Reliable Upper Cervical Care

By Elinor Fowle

Upper cervical care focuses on the atlas and the axis, the top two bones of the spine. The atlas is the uppermost vertebra, while the axis lies just beneath it. The brain stem, which rests on these two vertebrae, regulates communication between the body and brain, facilitating recovery from illnesses and injuries and maintaining the body's systems. Nerve signals pass through the atlas and axis as they are conveyed back and forth.

While the top two vertebrae are held in place with ligaments and muscles, the rest of the spinal column components are connected with joints that interlock. This construction style means that there is more mobility at the top of your spine. At the same time, the area is more susceptible to injury.

When the two top vertebrae are forced out of alignment, they can cause constriction of the brain stem. In turn, this squeezing can interfere with nerve signal transmission. Blocking of these signals can affect other areas throughout the body. The results can be pain, illness, numbness or a shutdown of the body part or system.

For pain and other conditions in the top two vertebrae, many chiropractors rely on the Atlas Orthogonal Technique to restore spinal health. Unlike traditional chiropractic adjustments, the Atlas Orthogonal Technique doesn't use manipulation of the spine. Rather, the chiropractor identifies the exact location and nature of damage and makes use of a specialized instrument designed to restore alignment of your vertebrae. There are no noises such as are associated with traditional adjustments. The approach is gentle, so that many patients do not realize that the re-positioning is being done.

In addition to misalignment of your cervical spine, the AO method is effective in relieving a number of other conditions of muscles and the skeletal frame. Some of the conditions are chronic fatigue, dizziness, fibromyalgia and sciatica.

The goal of upper cervical care is to correct spinal misalignments, optimizing nerve communication. It encompasses a whole-body approach that maximizes overall health. Upper cervical care provides natural solutions centered on addressing the underlying causes of health problems instead of just managing symptoms. Like other chiropractic modalities, upper cervical care is aimed at restoring and maintaining body balance.
